They are abt 15-20% of turkish pop, mostly in se. Kurdish lang is closer to persian--asian lang, not eur. Intellectuals in constantinople called for rev/independent kurd state. Turkey had lost war, saw opp (like many other groups) Brutally suppressed, 2 the point that there has even been apology for it. Until 1960s kurdish areas were under martial law and foreigners were forbidden. Kurds were not acknowledged by govt at all. Pkk as a 1970s radical youth movement. Turkish provinces under state of emergency (1987-2002) Young ppl trained in guerilla warfare, fight in lebanon war vs israel. Come home to turkey inspired, see opp to take independence. Govt recruited local men to fight against pkk. Both turkish military and pkk were violent/inhumane. Fled thru many states, eventually apprehended in kenya. Sentenced 2 death but turkey, wanting 2 bcome eu state, ended up giving life sentence. Around this point gave up mission for independence. Parties linked to pkk and then banned.
