Further complications when civ wars are involved w larger conflicts. Previous greek cleavages: venizelists vs royalists, redefined in 40s. 40s were second decade of war for greeks in 1900s. Attacked by axis members, totally occupied by june 1941. Debate over when civ war starts 43 or 46. 46=hav ww2 w resistance, then clear delineation to start of civ war. Purge of v/royalist cleavage--now communist vs capitalist. Ppl left w/out a choice--either resist or die from starvation. Going to die anyway, nothing to lost. In rural areas, one"s ethnicity could encourage resistance, if u were slavic-speaking, more inclined towards communists. Networks, ppl rarely join resistance movements alone--btwn uni students, poli prisoners, co-villagers. Family ties, professor-student ties, conversion--ppl going thru spiritual crises find meaning in resistance movements (uniquely solitary--find a network thru resistance)
