Founded freethinkers party, tho it eventually divided and by 1930s he was a marginal figure. But continued to hold important positions in govt, despite relative weakness of party. August 4: greece on the road to renaissance. Royalists and liberals got basically equal seats, deadlock. Would have had to come to agreement w communist party--this was alarming bc of recent bolshevik rev. Solution was to make metexas the pm of interim party so communists didn"t gain power. 4 of aug, makes deal w king, parli dissolved, metaxas basically bcomes dictator. Always seen as old, uncharismatic, small figure. He was aware of how he was perceived. Regime attempted to make m more likable.
