Conquered by ottomans in 1669, from venetians. Had been v autonomous under v rule. By 1800s, island had 50% muslim pop, most land ownership muslim converts. He was largely independent governor bc oe had other problems. Favored greeks to make up for the great losses they had suffered in war. Muslims did not like this--thought greeks were being rewarded for. Made large landowners no longer exempt from military service. Land no longer has as much value, start selling and moving to cities, christians move to rural areas . Those who did not leave oft converted 2 christianity. Revolts (1833, 41, 58, 66, 78, 89, 95, 97) Promised equal govt for all in oe, better tax/educ systs. Cretans displeased when no changes 10 yrs later.
