Manumission: a way of officially gaining freedom paying owner for your worth, initiating legal actions against them or enlisting in the army. Not easy to attain depends on historical context in the 18th century it became a lot harder sugar industry reaching its boom. Where you live also affected it it was harder to get free outside the spanish and portuguese empires. There were old laws about slavery that stated that all slaves were human possibility for freedom. Not possible under british or french law. Most important way to gain their freedom 75-80% was paying for their freedom; sometimes they had agreements yearly payments this method meant that the slave owner couldn"t back out of the arrangement. The rest of the slaves could receive manumission on their owners" death bed. Slaves could be passed down in a family usually it was said that the slave"s children were free.
