Document Summary

The background: heterodoxy in iberia (spain & portugal) A religious ethnography to detect apostasy or backsliding . Martin ocelotl v. spanish priests in mexico, 1530s-1540s. Orthodoxy became a central problem due to the reformation (protestant split of the roman catholic church and the counter-reformation) Realized not only were the protestants an issue, but also teaching their peoples (peasants, etc. ) how to truly be catholics was an issue. What rome wanted was very different from the realities of practice. Moriscos & jesuits needed to publicly convert = they became conversos. On the interior they kept their religion, on the exterior they were catholics. Some people were truly jesuits or moriscos inside, they just needed to keep the public illusion. On the other hand, for some conversos there was a sense of heterodoxy and they truly believed in both their respective religion and catholicism.
