Themes: wwii in east asia, allied post-war planning. 1) cf us imposing eco embargo (scrap metal + oil) towards japan in response to manchuria aggression [these resources were super important for japan, esp in war effort]] Japan has plans for negotiations + bomb pearl harbor. Not random, wanted to buy window of opportunity. L-> understood us would enter war at some point, wanted to cripple their fleet to give them time to put troops on the ground in pacific and get the edge over the us. L-> that way would be ready for defense once us bounced back (and make it harder for them) -- > idea of creating japanese empire.
