Indg ppls as the antithesis of modernity in popular discourse. The four stages of supposed human evolution . Transplanting dichotomies of primitivism/civilization into spatial arrangements. Towns were in eur view replacing wild nature of indg ppls, civilizing force. But also seen as corrupting innocent nature. Conceptual/physical removal of indg ppls from urban centers. Indigenous urbanization w/in the colonial borders of the united states. Two maj factors that led to rapid increase of indg ppls in us cities. Both larger and smaller cities, all areas of us. Urban indigeneity and the fight for continued self-determination/agency. Indg ppls in chi strove to create strong indg community--did not want to assimilate/give up culture. Leaving res cost indg ppls a lot of legal privileges. So urban indg ppls needed new strategies of self determination. Believed that non-indg society provided opportunity to escape degradation. Had actually be advanced class-wise by time in boarding school. Purpose was to encourage abolition of bia.
