We"ve talked about a series of changes that have transformed medicine over the last 200 years: Today: the medical profession, which has in its own changed just as radically as any of the other institutions we have talked about. The image on the first slide is an indicator of change where you begin to see in the 19th century organized activity. Its not even local or national professional activity, but by the 1870s and. 1880s doctors are beginning to organize international congresses, international meetings. Some of them are about science; some of them are about sharing medical knowledge and medical science; while some are quite political. Medical pluralism (18th century): numerous occupations, numerous healthcare occupations. Medical pluralism has gradually shifted to a situation of medical monopoly. It"s not a complete monopoly for every health care activity but it"s a pretty powerful monopoly.
