No truly sedentary native peoples, silver, precious metals in this area, South east coast of brazil- but it became a core area of eu colonization, started slow but sugar plantations made this (cid:1) (cid:1: tupi peoples and their neighbours of coastal brazil. Tupi peoples lived in semi sedentary agricultural villages of 4-800 people (cid:1) (cid:1) Tupi men devoted much of their energies to warfare against neighbours, helped structure society (cid:1) Lowland area marked by incredible cultural and linguistic diversity- challenge to portuguese observers- hard to keep straight animosities and alliances (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) Continuous state of warfare- integral structure in society. Both size and density of coastal and river floodplain populations at time of european contact significantly greater than forest peoples in brazil that we see today (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) Colonists cited these habits as justification for enslavement in order to teach them the ways of civilized people (cid:1) No corresponding economic privilege/social status among these societies (cid:1)
