Brought in southern black men from the north by the pennsylvanian railroad company: lessened overwhelming concentraion in south, opened up industrial jobs, signs of urbanizaion. 1898 boll weevil invaded texas and ate its way east across the south: crops devastated, agricultural workers thrown of land, reign of coton to an end as an economic backbone. Ww1: halt of immigraion of european industrial workers. Country did not enter ight unil 1917 but had been supplying europeans with weapons. Cessaion of immigraion resulted in labour shortage when workers were needed. War created an economic boom, increased demand for labour. Workers heard fantasic promises about the north. Every method used to draw black labour supply from the south. Labour agents from northern companies ofered train passes to young men: sparking migraion fever, young men 18-35 years old. Reason for leaving: freedom and independence, educaional opportuniies for their children, enough to save money and return.
