French jews begin to travel to algeria w/ mission to report back abt how fellow jews behave. Reports v negative, said algerian jews were dirty, uncivilized (v. Line btwn colonizer and colonized is much less clear. Mission is to draw directly from french enlightenment attitudes towards jews.
