Bourgeoises class jews developed culturally european identity. Muslim algerians (majority) did not embrace westernization/colonialism. Jews across north africa lived many different kinds of life (some nomadic, others settled/urban, etc. ) Lived under ottoman rule, special status semi-autonomous communities (dhimmi) Jews and muslims are able to form strong connections w some muslim communities. Friar disappears and local christian/arab pop accuse jews of murdering him. Jews falsely confess under pressure from govt--jews in france begin to feel insecure. French jews begin to travel to algeria w/ mission to report back abt how fellow jews behave. Reports v negative, said algerian jews were dirty, uncivilized (v. Line btwn colonizer and colonized is much less clear. Mission is to draw directly from french enlightenment attitudes towards jews.
