Hist 205- ancient mediterranean history- lecture 8: the persian empire. The persian empire was a great iron age empire that emerged 50 years after the fall of the assyrian empire. Persians came from southern iran and proved that new political and economic developments in the iron age were occurring outside the old bronze age centers of activity. Much larger empire than the assyrian empire, they were much more successful in proving that the people of the empire shared the benefits of it. Aryans: indo- europeans who moved to iran in the beginning of 2000 bce, Persians and the medes were descended from them. Some of these persians filtered into western mesopotamia and some migrated into india, where the last of the harappan civilization during the bronze age may have been eliminated. Those who remained became the ancestors of the medes in western iran and the persians in the south.
