Document Summary

The roman peace ii: the principate, ad 14-180. For 200 years after augustus things are pretty stable (outside of a civil war and couple assassinations) Brief civil war after they lose power. Vespasian (69-79), titus (79-81), domitian (81-96) (domitian is assassinated) Nerva (96-98), trajan (98-117), hadrian (117-138), antoninus pius (138-161), Everyone seems to be a pretty solid administrator and military man. They aren"t familial, they pass the emperorship to another established man who was close to them. Normally tried to establish them as augustus did for his sons - gave them good positions and strong recommendations. This is attempted by senatorial and imperial provinces. The imperial provinces were too dangerous for senators to handle, and they had all the military. Spent a couple years in the provinces then returned to the senate. The emperor controls the army, and therefore has all of the military glory.
