Office hours: wednesdays 6 - 7pm at 688 sherbrooke, room 379 or mondays 10-11am for david. Can look at the history in comparison to its neighbours, ie. europe or the americas, and often it does so in terms of what it lacks. We will look at the social, cultural and political events that have shaped modern latin america and. Spain, without any opinion on how the history has progressed, be it positive or negative but rather the impact of the historical occurrences. Civilization as an escape from barbarism (hobbes, hume, kant, hegel) Civilization as barbarism (hobbes, rousseau, benjamin, freud) In the 19th century, the amazon was considered the frontier of civilization, during the rubber boom. We will look at 2 different sections, the latin american experiment and the spanish experiment. Notably in the latin american experiment is the experimentation and implementation of different forms of government or systems of government and ideologies.
