Lecture #3: revisiting the experimental city techno-utopianism = belief that science and technology can bring about a utopia, or ideal society. Spilhaus became forgotten, causing too much misattribution of techno-utopian ideas to other people (in the 90s) scholars assume techno-utopias and eco-techno-utopias are new or have a more recent genealogy. Experimental city emerged in an era where state fetishized technology. Gone in the us, but other states have the money and political will. New urbanism: less tech, more walking, the ideal in n. america for last few seen as crucial in the us (optimism and patriotism) decades. Athelstan spilhaus radically re-imagined cities based on recent inventions and technologies. Songdo and masdar are v. similar to minnesota experimental city (mxc) Experimental techno-utopias can arise only under specific societal conditions. Songdo, s. korea largest new master-planned smart city, seen as most successful.
