GEOG 322 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Throughfall, No Rain, Return Period
Document Summary
Convection: uplift convection as a lifting mechanism: when it occurs the air near the ground is heated by the earth"s surface, warm air rises, cools and creates precipitation. Global distribution of rain: low rain in poles, descending air masses/ high pressure at surface, no rain, warm air at equator, high moisture content convectional rainfall, leads to converging trade winds and monsoon climates, low pressure. Hyetograph graphical representation of rainfall distribution over time. Can make for everywhere in the world. See what happens monthly/ by state etc. Each type of rain event has an image that pops up. Important factors: temperature/ seasonality/ orographic rain/ source of water. Have an event take a rank (that has a list) in intervals derive how often they occur. Plot them and rank them from the most to lowest rain intensity events. For a rank of 1 for the most intense rainfall probability of 10% for a heavy rain intensity storm to occur.
