Anti-planning revolt: richard sennett: anarchy, diversity, and creative disorder = essential to urban life, accomplished scholar with experience in modernist design, grew up in modernist cabrini green public housing in chicago. Example: st-hubert plaza: 1969: unorderly, buzzing neon lights, 2009: orderly, bland, clean, order doesn"t necessarily mean that the urban landscape will provide citizens a better experience of the city. Streets & safety: modernists view streets as places for efficient traffic, therefore we must remove pedestrians, separates urban landscape by function, streets are for transportation (modern movement) Jacobs argues that streets and sidewalks provide places to neighbours to meet/visit: they provide safety.
