Document Summary
In 430 bce, cities were centres of administration and religion, with very little agriculture and trade. Any trade was done for food as it was not easily grown in urban centres. There was no industrialisation, and technology was not very advanced. Transportation was on foot (5-8km/hr max), on animal (15km/hr max), if there were roads; and on ships, but even these had inconvenient sails and were slow. The 25 largest cities in the world were located on a latitude between 20 n and 40 n, across asia and n. The industrial revolution in the 19th c means that cities are more multifunctional, and trade is a big part of life. Technological advancements mean that the friction of distance is reduced. The 25 largest cities are now located on latitudes from buenos aires to moscow.
