Communicate what makes someone leave/ enter a place. Territory is present, and dynamic need to continue partitioning space and classifying. Provides a spatial footprint if you are inside/ outside there are different rules breaks down prescribed to different spaces. Regulate personal space/ social interaction: regulate social behaviors. Regulate access to people and resources / identity and group membership: has clear spatial boundary, unites people over a cause. Territory is implemented by controllers people in power and those to be controlled: people need to comply to the rules of space, there is also contest and evade the rules, landscape as text. Can be spatial and can be symbolic. What is the signifier/ meanings in the signs. Explicit: have literal meaning, welcome, tells you what to expect, can be explicit, even if not explicit can represent symbolic things like power. Representation of spatial knowledge in the human brain.
