Population will keep growing: how to manage population suppress population growth is not that great, more people consume more food more meat in diet, agricultural expansion. Agriculture has been expanding for a very long time. Take new lands and convert them to agriculture to meet growing needs for food. Agricultural frontiers agriculture expands over other land uses. Small holder frontiers in the amazon: smallholder = person holding a small amount of property, driven by subsistence needs, driven by government making sure their populations have enough to eat. Interest in colonizing different parts (for geopolitics: rents are influenced/ manipulated by the government creating new roads, incentives and cheap or free land, rents are manipulated by the people who live there, support agriculture. Countries make explicit goals to increase cultivated area: attain food security, faster economic development. Agricultural frontiers are driven by different types of actors: different actors, environments with a drastically modified landscape, global land reserve.
