To become familiar with the epidemiology, clinical presentation, dx, tx and complications of ibd. It is a group of chronic disorders that cause inflammation of the git. Most often classified as crohn"s disease (cd) or ulcerative colitis (uc) Not to be confused with ibs though you can have both. It is a lifelong disorder which progresses over time: more of the digestive tract becomes involved as the sxs progress. Relapsing and remitting: there will be periods where there are few of mild sxs well intervals . The number one cause of mortality in cd or uc is suicide: due to untreated condition, depression. Genetics, infection, environment, diet, smoking/drugs (habits: all come together in an elaborate interplay to cause an altered immune state. Drugs: now we know that accutane carries a 600-fold risk of developing uc, cocentix for arthritis is associated with uc as well. Incidence: 16. 9/100 000 cd, 12. 9/100 000 cd, highest in qc and ns.
