o You cannot test on humans to KNOW something is carcinogenic
o When we test on animals with vastly different physiologies, we use these as proxies but not as

- human papilloma viruses—primarily types 16 and 18, which are sexually transmitted—have been linked to
cervical cancer – especially developing countries
o far more than that in the papilloma virus family
o the 16 and 18 only represent 75% of the linkage to cancer
o more than 25 other types of papillomaviruses have been linked to cancer as well
- hepatitis B and C—linked to cancer of the liver
o people who are baby boomers should check themselves for hep C
- human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)—linked to Kaposi's sarcoma and lymphoma
- retroviruses—linked to cancers in animals other than humans

- is associated with 50% to 60% of all cancer deaths
- is causally linked to cancers of the lung, upper respiratory tract, oesophagus, bladder, pancreas
- is probably a cause of cancer of the stomach, liver, kidneys, colon, and rectum

- The life expectancy in the north is a bit lower, with higher smoking percentages

- At the turn of the 19/20th century, in the 20s and 30s, people started increasing their consumption of cigarettes
- The frequency of lung cancer started increasing with a lag after the increase of consumption
- Female lung cancer started increasing later then males because it was less cool
