RELG 271 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Paraphilia, Virtual Sex, Naturism
Document Summary
We live in a society of experts who can speak of many things but those who are very disabled and unable to experience sexual pleasure (sexually deprived), they are unable to speak up. Foucault: echoes freud"s observation that human sexuality is naturally. Polymorphous" (before society forces it to follow the same rules. Both authors argue that human sexuality is not naturally perverse", it is society that manufactures sexual perversion. In our society we have many ways of examining and displaying sexuality but are not comfortable doing it. Society perversely enjoys this: people treat each other in personal and romantic relationships (doctor and the patient, patient and psychiatrist) Humans are not allowed to enjoy sexual pleasure, but rather are forced to talk about it and study it, but cannot just enjoy it. During the victorian period, women were expected to cover up. Argue against foucault: looking back at freud"s times, this enforced modesty was real.
