-Changing concept of adultery
*-Male as well as female sin: Matthew 27-28 “Do not commit adultery”.
—> Targeting men not women as adulterous
-Response to adultery: forgiveness
-Woman caught in adultery - John 8: 1-11
-Woodhead - thick and thin
*-The body and sexual acts are religiously and morally charged. Body is a means of relating to
the divine
*-Sexuality is set in the contact of a thick web of relationships and commitments
-Divine-human conjugality?
-Giotto di Bondone (1266-1377)
-Iconic to medieval art (modern western)
-Athena chapel: traces the life of Christ in these paintings.
-Wedding of achena: first miracle of Jesus. Traditions of medieval spirituality.
—> Jesus’s father Joseph and his mother Mary in the paining - family event. Franciscan
tradition of meditation
—> Miss Mary Magellan: the wife/bride is the most interesting because she is the only figure
who is looking at the viewer (making eye contact). Extended family wedding and Mary is there
as the elder sister to celebrate (intimate family affair)
—> Jesus arrives at the wedding as the true bride groom. At the end John leaves with Jesus to
go on a mission not with Mary.
—> In the medieval word view, the person caught in adultery is Mary Magellan. Throws herself
at Jesus’ feet (kissing them) and asks for forgiveness. Act of repentance, a very intimate act.
Her love is a symbol of bridal love that will be remembered through history.
-Giotto’s painting of couples: Mary and Jesus and Mary and John (the wedding of Canine). The
mystery in the life of Christ.
-Not just the path of celibacy but the path of conjugality that leads to nuptially
-Resurrection scene: Jesus is resurrected from the dead and the first person to see him is Mary.
She is the symbol of bridal love.
-Notion of bridal logging/nuptial longing
-Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516)
-Garden of earthly delights: an image of Genesis (the creation of Adam and Eve). The
bridegroom is Adam but the bridal relationship is between Christ and Eve.
-The couple breaks the relationship, head off on their own because of their disobedience with
God. The message of Bosch as they break their relationship with Christ and go off is that the
bride is still being taken to the alter. If the marriage bond isn't with Christ it’s going to be with
something more problematic. The marital bond is not an end in itself but a pathway.
-Polymorphous sexuality: colluded world of human sexuality
-Thomistic natural law and sexual ethics: Roman catholic approach to sexual ethics
-Secular approaches to natural law
-Within christianity there are 3 main parts: Catholicism, Protestantism, Orthodox
-Natural law: John Paul 2, veirtatis splendor 12 - human beings are ordered in a particular way.
We have a purpose and these facts/premises say what we ought to do.
-Faith and reason: John Pail 2, fides et ratio - faith and reason should make sense together.
Informed and right reason should not be in conflict.
What is nature/natural?
-Classical (Greek/Roman; Christian)
-Intrinsic and universal among particular
-Ex: all humans have same (fundamental universal) human nature
