Part ancestor spirit: heaven shows its displeasure (treaing heaven as if it were a person) Part impersonal force: heaven makes the seasons go round, (treaing heaven as if it were an impersonal force; similar to concept of nature in the west) King, wang, : three horizontal lines denote heavens, earth, and humans in the center the king is in the middle, whose job it is to connect all three. In theory not necessarily like in pracice: heaven gives mandate to virtuous person to rule, ruler responsible to heaven to rule virtuously on behalf of the people, i. e. not be selish or corrupt, heaven shows its pleasure/displeasure .
