*Assignment 1: 15 advantages or disadvantages
1 identity marker but cannot be race (ethnic backgrounds, culture, language, gender, social
class, sexual preference, abilities and disabilities, religion) ex. women vs males in the workplace
-Writing about yourself (your experiences, your privileges)
-Auditory learner: can hear it and retain it
-Visual learner: have to see it
-The more senses you utilize the better you hear
-“Lack of conceptual understanding of the term ‘multiculturalism’ has led to its misinterpretation.
The popular perception is that it is a policy that caters to ‘ethnic group’ and this enables the
majority groups.. to watch from the sidelines”
-Lack of conceptual understanding = the lack of understanding a concept
-Multiculturalism has been misinterpreted in the school system
-Culture - tied to ethnic groups
-Men and women have different cultures (way of thinking and knowing)
-Cultures are different nevus people think differently: a person from one religious faith will not
think of god the same way as someone with no religious faith (Atheist). Someone who believes
in faith believes that when they die they are going somewhere (heaven, hell or will be
reincarnated)
-Multicultural does not mean ethnic cultures (misinterpretation)
-“Multiculturalism means many cultures. Multiculturalism is an ideology, a system of beliefs
determined by the existence of many cultures” ex of multiculturalism as an ideology (a way of
thinking, ends with ‘ism’): that people have differences but that they also have the same rights.
Difference does not equal deficiency, people have the right to be different and the right to the
same opportunities.
-“Canadian multiculturalism stands apart from that of other immigrant countries…not just
because of how it has responded to the needs of minority, immigrant, or indigenous groups, but
also because of the specific demographics of the Canadian population and the breadth of these
people’s needs, the constitutionalization of Canada’s practices of accommodation, and the
appropriation of diversity into Canadians’ sense of national identity”.
-Culture: refers to the way a group of people responds to the environment
-Is a way of seeing the world in terms of cognition (knowing), emotion (effective domain), and
behaviour
-Is a concept (idea) that is constantly changing because people are always changing
-Important aspect of globalization: the migration of people from one place to another
-“The emphasis of multicultural education must be the politics of difference, not ethnic cultures”
—> When you are different, you are discriminated against. When you have power over
difference it means you can discriminate against people
-Multiculturalism is about the politics of difference. There’s so much harm you can do in terms of
difference in terms of gender, religion, language ability, sexual preference…
-“Focus on the politics of difference does not imply a blindness to difference”
—> When you try to gloss over differences it implies two things: 1) that to be different is bad 2)
that a difference will have an impact on how that child will perform
—> If you treat each child the same way you do not give them equal opportunity - each child
has different abilities. Difference between equality -to treat the same way and equity - everyone
get’s the same opportunity/fairness
-Don’t want to be blind to difference (must acknowledge differences)
