The crisis in journalism: challenges to the newspaper revenue model. Decreasing revenue from circulation due to online sales, drop in readership as well. From individual and chain proprietors to conglomerates. From the daily edition to 24 hour news. Pressure to produce more, faster, w less. Increased volume of content, refreshed and changed on short cycles. Newspaper closures, reduction in the size of newspapers and proportion of news content, closure of bureaus and desks (foreign, regional, and local) Rationalization of reporting and editorial staff due to layoffs. Decline of specialized beat reporters; rise of freelance and general assignment reporters. Decrease of in-house production of original content: the stories we see in newspapers are recycled content and are not written in the paper itself. Reduction in long term institutional and investigative stories, there has been an increase in short term event based stories. Cross-promotion of events and products originating in other parts of the conglomerate.
