Midterms were handed out- grades uploaded on mycourses. Possible that there was a conflict that provided the basic narrative for the oral tra- dition upon which the iliad is based. Trojan war supposedly took place before the great collapse of the mediterranean. Might have been sea people, invasions, climate change, migrations combination of those factors. Trojan war took place before that time; late bronze age, before the out- break of the dark ages . World in which the movement of goods, ideas, people was relatively easy and prosperous. 1200 bc - catastrophe - writing was lost for a long time in greece. 8th century - writing reappeared in greece; iliad was written a few centuries be- fore that. Hard to tell; they probably lacked many of the material/cultural background connected to the late bronze age before the collapse. Most recent excavations reveal troy was a prosperous trade center in the late.
