BIOT 505 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Paul Wiseman, Crispr, Biological Engineering
Document Summary
9 september 2016: must develop a product in order to have a biotechnology. Otherwise it would just be research: technology involving the use of biological organism (micro), biomolecules (protein/ dna), extracts (drugs), or tools (diagnostics) to produce products. Plus a strong and solid business plan to commercialize such products: biotechnology to feed, heal, and power our world, low tech and designer food products. Designer food products: gmos for resistance, esp. after crispr: simple and designer medicines. Simple: aspirin (used hundreds of years prior to discovery of its basic mechanism) Designer: cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins), anti-cancer drugs, viagra: low tech and designer fuels. Designer: production of oil/ high-energy compounds by organisms/plants. Could increase life span, say, if cancer and other disorders are managed: application of physical sciences, i. e. physics. Dna structure could not have been resolved had it not been for x-ray diffraction studies. Radiolabelled isotopes to determine metabolism/ cac in early biochemistry, i. e. 14c glucose.
