Catabolism = breaking down food and building new molecules. Anabolism = building larger molecules from smaller ones. Metabolism = conversion of food into energy. In isolated systems (the universe), the degree of disorder only increases. Entropy (s) is a measure of disorder. Positive s spontaneously favours a rxn there is a difference btw spontaneity and speed. Biological systems release heat into surrounding as a by-product of these rxns. Heat = excitation of molecules = entropy. Any organized system that is neglected will return to a disorganized state. Cells = units in extended system including the medium around it. From monomers to polymers makes entropy (molecules more excited heat) Biochem looks into anabolism and catabolism as pathways. Metabolic pathways are more branched that we originally believes. Developed into a field of study called metabolomics. E cannot be created or destroyed, rather, it can onl be converted from one form to another.
