Juxtacrine: direct contact between signaling & target cell: signaling molecule and target cell close by, first 3 most popular. If withdraw all factors from a mammalian cell, the cell will die: normal programmed cell death. If do not supply cell with any outside signals, will die: survival factors a, b, and c tell the cell survive. If add d & e, tell cell to proliferate and grow: can have other factors that tell the cell what has to do --differentiate into specialized cell, endless possibilities, factors & combinations of factors. Viruses: many ways for cells to grow & proliferate. If block one way, will just find another: similar to viruses --this is why have so few anti-virals available, when have viral infection, not much can do. In theory it works, because target many different pathways such that there is no way of the tumor to evade (like for virus: dealing with intracellular targets, so lots of side effects.
