Metabolism I
How is Organization Maintained
Constant energy input to maintain order in cell
o Disorder always increases (second law)
Enzyme catalysis to speed up & control chemical reactions
o Enzymes can be used to control how fast reactions go
Coupling of unfavored & favored chemical reactions
o Linked sequential reactions
Favored one pulls the unfavored one
o Storage of energy by carrier molecule
Common use in biology
Store energy to use it separately for unfavored one
o Glycolysis is a concrete example of how this works
Energy Coupling
Energy from a favorable reaction can be used to drive an unfavorable reaction
G of the reactions are additive
As long as the total G is still negative, both reactions take place
o Negative G must be larger in amplitude than the positive one
o Overall reaction still favorable
Sequential Reactions
X Y is unfavorable
Y Z is very favorable; has a lower G than Y to X
X Z becomes favorable when both reactions take place (net G is -)
o Join them together (in solution together), get net flow from X to Z
o Even though have molecules of Y that tend to go to X, there is a greater
probability that they will go to Z
Over time, depleting X to form Y, and Y quickly depleted to Z
Majority of reaction going from Y to Z at equilibrium
Metabolic Pathways
Multiple reactions can be linked sequentially
o Each step can have a different G, some negative, some positive, but as
long as final G is negative, net reaction is favored
o Overall
G from A to F must be negative for the chain to be favored
Also need the final step from E to F to be negative, otherwise end up
pooling in the middle
o Like a ski slope going up & down
As long as the final G is negative, many of the intermediate reactions can be
unfavorable
Or, if final product is continuously removed, reactions will never reach equilibrium
