Metabolism VIII
Glycolysis
Most biochemical reactions happen in physiological states where they are
somewhat reversible
o Enzymes catalyzing forward & backward reactions
Glycolysis only partially oxidizes glucose
o Combustion of glucose releases a lot of energy when you convert it all to
CO2 and H2O
o But glycolysis does not manage to break down glucose all the way down
Furthest we got was the formation of 2 molar equivalent of CO2 and 2
molar equivalents of acetate/lactate from pyruvate end products of
glycolysis
Oxidative metabolic cycle
o Redox chemistry in which convert carbons into reduction potential
o Convert all glucose in the system down to reduction potential and release
carbons in CO2
Significant chemical energy is retained in pyruvate
Complete oxidation to CO2 provides the majority of cellular energy, but requires
oxygen as the ultimate electron acceptor
o Aerobic process
Oxidation
A series of reactions in the mitochondria can fully oxidize metabolic products
Acetyl-CoA generated by pyruvate dehydrogenase or the breakdown of fatty
acids is oxidized to CO2 by the citric acid cycle
Oxidative energy generated by glycolysis and the citric acid cycle (NADH or
FADH2) is used to maintain the electrochemical gradient across the mitochondrial
inner membrane by the electron transport chain
o Take reduction energy from citric acid cycle and convert it into an
electrochemical gradient across the mitochondrial membrane
Finally, the electrochemical gradient itself powers the production of ATP through
oxidative phosphorylation
o Function of oxidative phosphorylation mechanism using F0F1 ATP synthase
Acetyl CoA in Oxidative Catabolism
Alternative breakdown pathway for fatty acid degradation
