Urban Design and History

Three types of city-building:
Vernacular city-building
Everyday urbanism
« Grands projets urbains »
Defining “urban design”:
Shaping the physical setting for life in cities, towns, etc.
Art of making places
Involves the design of buildings, groups, spaces, and landscapes
establishing the processes
Krieger (2009):
oMain point: The best way to involve people in the process of city-building is
through an approach to community advocacy in which you “do no harm”
Urban design seen as a way to alleviate urban crisis
What do urban designers need to know?
“The preoccupations of urban design… are a self-consciously normative endeavor”
oUrban Designers asking the question: How can we make cities better?
“better cities”: To provide opportunities, behavioral and aesthetic, for all
citizens and visitors, that are accessible
Increasing connections, via increasing accessibility, to increase
opportunity
The components of a well-designed city:
Conserves the natural environment and is responsive to it (i.e.- emergence of the High
Line in NYC, idea grew from foliage on abandoned train tracks)
oMust recognize agency of the natural environment
Creates a desirable public realm
It supports social interaction in residential neighborhoods, workplaces, and mixed-use
downtowns
oUrban design often falls short on this point:
When you see people in public, unlike yourself (in dress, physical
characteristics, etc.), empirical evidence suggests that these encounters
in urban space exacerbate stereotypes instead of building tolerance
towards “others”
Urban design: interdisciplinary collaboration, marked by complexity and contradiction
More on 3 types of city-building:
Urban Design as tradition
oSeen in old towns, cities (i.e.- Old Town of Tallinn)
