ANTH 504 Lecture 1: Presentation #1 - Notes
Document Summary
Hello everyone, i will be presenting this week on landscape archaeology. Presented here is an example of the batad rice terraces of the philippine cordilleras (the first site to be included in the unesco world heritage list cultural landscape category, in 1995). To begin, landscape archaeology studies the human use of land over extensive periods of time. More precisely, it addresses the complex issues of the ways that people have consciously and unconsciously shaped the land around them. This multidisciplinary approach to cultural landscape, quoting pearsall"s encyclopedia of archaeology, recognizes that the latter materializes worldviews, and yields spaces of social memory, identity, and history. Most often, landscapes are altered to indicate social status through symbolic references. Quite literally, landscape archaeology helps illustrate relationships between material culture, human alteration of land/cultural modifications to landscape, and the natural environment.
