Reading for this week: one approach that anth have taken to global understandings that don(cid:495)t conform to, environmental management conservation of resources, received wisdoms: explored their role through 2 examples. Idea of carrying capacity have led to models of enviro management. Human rights: understanding progress through moral and legal terms, creates a series of contentions debates, cultural difference vs universalism, cultural relativism vs activism, hr: have become part of public discourse today. Lecture outline: undhr (1948, anthropological and african debates around the undhr, fgm/fgc/fgo, why these, one of the most controversial hr concerns, highlights many of the debates in anthropology. Undhr: historical text (1948, guided by cultural norms, changed overtime (not-static) It changed over time elaboration of rights within the undhr through time. Hr suggests this is the case, yes: undhr prescriptive rather than descriptive, anthropologists used cultural relative to criticize undhr and also to make a political stance against the undhr.
