Briish social anthropology: order in the absence of state. Tradiionally, social anthropology has had a stronger ie legal anthropology than has cultural. Has its roots in briish and european colonialism, while cultural anthropology originated in north america. Rooted in a concern for how socieies create social order. Not concerned with studying civilized society , known to bracket out colonial structures. Social anthropology sought to reject speculaion by using ethnography to document earlier socieies. Many previous anthropologists, such as durkheim, had used the speculaive method to gain insight into situaions they had no irsthand knowledge of. If i were a horse method of understanding. This new method required extended stays in the ield, oten spanning years. Generally accepted model is a minimum of one and a half years in one locaion, spending one third of that ime to learn the language, and the next year observing a full seasonal cycle.
