Archaeologists follow a grid, they decide what intervals they will walk on as they are looking for signs of human activity of the past. They are used for large sites, and settlements. Satellite images and lidar are used in combination with gis. They are a way of taking numerical data, and transforming it in different ways. They are a way of thinking spatially and visually. The lidar technology is popular in jungle areas. The lidar technology scans the ground with a pulsating laser; the laser reflects images back. Roots of certain plants will grow in certain types of environments. If you were using a helicopter to survey the ground-you could spot certain type of vegetation. Locals can tell you where site is, and they can tell you about sites that once existed.
