Largest of the harappan cities at 250 ha. Built of baked clay bricks - well-preserved, they don"t erode like adobe - the height of the walls. Excavations began in 1921, supervised by john marshall. Continued excavation until 1931, then sporadically until ww2 and stopped in the 1960s (now a. Today"s excavation is not done in the same way. Appears to be a planned city - presence of a grid plan with streets meeting at right angles. All streets oriented to the cardinal points. 2 main sectors: the citadel - to the west. Interpreted as the ceremonial area: lower, larger town to the east. Different phases of growth and urban organization. The river had shifted right in the middle of the site. Most building excavated in the 1920s so not many artifacts recovered, thus the function is not determined (no direct evidence) 400m x 200m ; walls can be 6m wide. Bricks are set in gypsum mortar and sealed with bitumen.
