They are part of a broader social and cultural development. The term harrapa comes from the type-site which was discovered in the early 20th century. (type-site: first of its kind) It is one of the 2 largest of the indus valley. Harrapan civilization is not to be equated with a centralized state or empire (it is not a place of political unity). It was composed of a number of urban centers organized in city-states; all of these shared a broad culture. They are city-states like the ed period in mesopotamia. Similarities can be seen in terms of economic and urban organization, writing system, public works. Despite the absence of highly visible expressions of authority, there is presence of complexity. Harappa and mohenjo daro - most extensively researched and excavated. Situated in the area of northern india and southern pakistan (difficult area to do research: climate and contested international border)
