Manzanilla 1999 different research tools to reconstruct life. Located in the largest walled compound of the site. Marks the southern end of the avenue of the dead. Enclosed ceremonial space but actually open and measures nearly half a kilometer on each side. Temple of quetzalcoatl at end of ciudadella and open space in front of it for ceremonial staging. Footprints of foundations of two smaller pyramids can be seen and smaller ones among it. Ongoing debates about function of this structure. Earlier argue it was an area of elite residence, maybe a palace complex for hereditary elites there is not much evidence of habitation though. Talud/tablero architecture and lining the edges of talud are stone sculptures of. Emphasis at temple is on two deities: quetzalcoatl (feathered serpent) and tlaloc (rain/storm god) Avian aspect comes from tropical quetzal and the serpent aspect is a rattlesnake. Quetzals associated with warfare, violence and serpents associated with transformation.
