Lecture 3: ways of anthropolical knowing (sept 9th) The anthropological way of knowing is unique in that it involves fieldwork. Work in the field place where people live with and relate to each other. Traditionally, anthropologists studied small groups (tribes, village, etc. ), but now there is a vast study, less bounded (gamblers in las vegas). Anthropology as a method is about a technique that allows you to see things afresh, see something else in a new way as a vehicle for understanding yourself in a new way. Methods: interview, maps, archival collections, artifacts, plants, recordings, hang out participant observation: main method used to learn what is going on daily, we learn what is going on as we immerse in another world. Anthropology conundrum: objects of our study are subjects, in other sciences, these are objects. The tools in anthropology are subjects (ourselves) compared to other sciences.
