Socio-Cultural Anthropology ANTH 202
Class 13 – Migration
HMONG DIASPORA
Evicted / Dispossessed form their lands in China and moved to other South-East Asian areas →
Hmong Diaspora across South-East Asia (Vietnam, Laos…)
Different kind of “imagined community / identity” // indigenous people who connect with a
particular landscape and territory
The Hmong maintain their identity through this feeling of dispossession and movement. They
become ethnic minorities within foreign countries.
U.S. evacuations → creation of refugee camps in Thailand, Vietnam… Their identity is a
narrative of displacement and loss of country
They share a chronic condition → statelessness with indigenous people
History: War VS Laos/Vietnam communist regimes: “Secret army” during the Secret War with
the CIA (U.S. recruiters)
Some managed to flee to Thailand and became refugees; others in the United States → followed
their leader either in Cali or Minnesota (60,000, biggest comm)
Others couldn’t make it and are still living in jungles in Laos
The Hmong is a strong community in the U.S., but there’s a deep sense of betrayal within the
country: never rewarded for their role in war
There’s a mix of cultures: “Westernized” → slides with pictures of beauty contests, films…
U.S. Hmong Media and film is quite widespread and recognized across the nation: it has
developed by the Hmong community to create & maintain an identity they carry
Video of rapper → using poetry, words, rap, hip-hop to “honour” his ancestors and his culture
which is very often criticized / discriminated against
Translocal relations Hmong Americans – Hmong in Asia
• Hmong tourism and visiting kin
• Transnational business & media
• Remittances
• Marriage partners
