1- stem cell definition, detection, and types- adult stem cells. There are lots of misunderstandings and instances of the public being mislead with. There are lots of things we thought were established facts but were then disproved years. 1- functional definition of stem cells- stem cell basics. There are self-renewing tissue in our bodies, such as skin and blood. The common characteristic of these tissues or organs is that cells are constantly lost, yet we constantly replenish them at the same time. In terms of skin, cells are constantly shed and renewed. The outermost layer of our skin is a layer of dead cells to avoid the invasion of water and pathogens, and to maintain the integrity of our body structure. The epithelium of small intestine is also self-renewing. In the crypts (although the exact location is controversial) are stem cells. There is a cell turn-over every 5 days.
