Document Summary

We are going to look at the cytoarchitecture of the cortex, how the cells are arranged. From last lecture, we saw that the cortex is a thin sheet of tissue, it"s only about 2 to 4 mm thick and within that sheet, the cells are organized into distinct layers. This is a region of cortex that has been stained with. Let"s take a look at these 3 different stains: nissl stain: this stains the cell bodies of neurons, but not the dendrites and not the axons but they stain all of the neurons. The cortex is organized into 6 distinct layers: They have names but they are more often referred to by their numbers: molecular layer: the 1st layer, it is the outermost layer. This is a layer that mainly consists of dendrites, axons and synapses (there are other molecular layers in the brain, and it is kind of a generic term that just means there"s hardly any cells)
