From evolutionary point of view = cortex can survive better. Ex: primary somatosensory cortex organized into areas & functional vertical module/columns. 2- info relay from #1 primary visual cortex ba17 v1. Functions of visual area v1 & v2 carried out in separate cortical regions rather than mixed together in same region because minimize wiring cost/length of axons. Wiring minimization = explain why cortical areas organized as separated & not mixed. Selection pressure to minimize wiring axon length & volume. *axons = expensive to build & maintain [lot energy to pump ions] & take lot of space. Evolutionary advantage = minimized building cost by minimizing axons length. *if areas heavily interconnected = clustered together then short axons. Many long axons ex: many axons connected few short axons ex: 1 axon connect v1 & v2. Wiring minimization = also provides explanation for topographic organization in cortex. Topographic maps homunculus = arrangement that minimizes wiring length.
