Document Summary

Reflexes: reflexes are one of the most simplified organized functions of the spinal cord. Stretch reflex: a very simple circuit that explains the action, afferent neurons make direct synapses with interneurons and motor neurons in the spinal cord, to either inhibit and activate motor neurons. This allows the muscles in question to maintain a certain level of contraction regardless of changing external forces. They also severed the brain from the brainstem and spinal cord. They found that when they put the animal on a treadmill, the animal will start walking. This indicates that walking doesn"t require any sensory inputs at all - goes against sherrington"s hypothesis: the circuitry for a walking rhythm is actually contained in its entirety in the spinal cord. The neurons in the spinal cord have an intrinsic ability to generate this type of movement by themselves. It is how the neurons are interconnected to each other that enables this: called central pattern generators.
