Document Summary

Capacitor produces electric field between two parallel charged plates. Electric field can be shown as in this diagram. Outside the two plates, the electric fields cancel out and give zero. In between the two plates, the electric fields add up according to the equation. Electric field between the two plates is also uniform. Charge up the plates and disconnect the battery source: charges stay constant as long as each plate is isolated. C represents the capacitance in vacuum; this is a key equation that will be used to solve multiple problems involving capacitors. Put in between two charged plates, it reduces the overall electric field between the two plates (ex. in real life, The external electric field polarize the molecules in dielectric so that the induced field (eind) within the dielectric oppose the original electric field (eo) Etotal = eo - eind < eo. To completely reduce the electric field in between plates, put in an ideal conductor.
