Document Summary

Stomach chemistry: costs of drugs, otc drugs were sold $ 1. 4 billion in north america, prescription drugs were sold $ 20 million in na, sammy davis junior (black/one eye/jewish) Hyperacidicity (too much hcl production) causes: eating too much, eating too fast, eating spicy food for some people, pain relievers (nsaids) Smoking: due to the nsaids affects the acidity of the stomach; influences the prostaglandins. Treatment for stomach hyperacidity: neutralizing the hcl acid by taking a base, acid and base will react and produce = salt + water, types of bases, a) sodium bicarbonate. Na hco3 + hcl = water + sodium chloride + co2. Fast cheap: acid rebound; if frequently taken or excessively taken = produce more acid (la chauffeur principle?) Systemic alkalosis: b) alkaseltzer (sodium bicarbonate + asa) Baking soda is only nahco3 but baking powder contains nahco3 + dry acid. Hcl + caco3 -> cacl2 + water + co2. Pros: good source of calcium for people with osteoporosis.
